Monday was a "good" day! It didn't start off that way!
I didn't feel like it. I put my bag in the car. We got Lizzie to school... It was Pouring Down Rain.... Jack asked what we were doing and I replied I don't know. I just didn't feel it. So I told myself to get in the water and do 200m. That was the goal - To see if I could swim it continuously. So off to the YMCA. I got in the pool, swam 50m and had to take a break. 200m was not going to as easy as jumping in and knockin' it out. But I did knock it out and then stayed to do some drills. 45 minutes of tiring exercise. Out of the pool and had a great morning running errands.
The afternoon was all too quick and it was time for Tri 101 Training. Seeing as it had poured rain all day and I hadn't ran all week, I was a little nervous about the challenge running 3miles. There was a small sun break followed by more rain.... I had brought a rain jacket and was happy about it! I learned how to change a tire on my bike (yay - I had no idea!). The rain went away and we started to run... This time, I kept my pace in my forefront of my mind. I also had people to run with... THIS MADE IT GREAT! I had about a mile where I ran by myself and it was tougher... I felt the water in my toes (yes - it was slushy grassy rain water and red clay mud), rocks and felt my crap rainy day shoes hurtin' my feet. The people that I ran with were awesome people! I had no idea "who" I was running with. Every person has their own story and each is so interesting!
I was going to do the bike course after the run but the couches around me told me it wasn't a good idea. Dusk...Random Area of Town.... Solo.... not a great combination for a bike ride.... so I took their advise and headed home.
Overall, it was a great day! Bodymedia says I burned over 3000 calories yesterday! Woot! The scale doesn't reflect but I'm ok with that! I can feel the work I did.
CEP Night Socks - I LOVE these. The past couple runs I have used these and LOVE LOVE LOVE them. No shin splints. No hurty calves. PLUS they are super bright and reflective so others can see me and not hit me! Totally worth it! I may learn to like running!
Water & Sports Drinks - I'm finally back to being able to drink water during a water work out. I'm not sure what happened for a long while- water wasn't cutting it... I'd get foggy, feel exhausted and out of it. At one point last week I realized I didn't need it. It feels my body is catching up and I am getting healthy!
Mud Between Your Toes
A piece of a conversation on last nights run has left me thinking. We got talking about running through mud puddles on trail runs (cough*cough* I haven't run a trail run- others have - maybe one day!). Yup - until that point I would groan every time the cold rain water would seep into my shoes. When I would lose my footing in the mud I would berate myself for not being a good enough runner to keep a stable foot - klutz. In the middle of the conversation the concept that you have to LET yourself run through the puddles. Somewhere in life we have learned not to get dirty. Stay clean. At some point we lost the enjoyment in running through a mud puddle. We lost the rush of the water tickling our toes! We forgot to take pleasure in the unusual. That getting dirty is not bad or wrong just a different way (and sometimes the easiest way) of doing things. My lesson of the day- prepare (wear your crap shoes) and then enjoy running through the puddles!
